Zum Roten Baren
Freiburg, Baden Wurttemburg, Germany.
Take a look at the painted arcade bow with a column in the cellar of this landmark inn, and you’ll be staring at something dating from around 1000AD. And it is that which reputedly makes Zum Roten Baren Germany’s oldest hotel (although others also claim to the title).
In fact, this place was in existence before the town of Freiburg itself, it being founded in the early 12th century. As such, while little recorded evidence of notable historic figures having stayed here exists (though stay they must surely have), the “Red Bear” certainly deserves to be listed on Nights in the Past on account of its sheer age.
Situated in the oldest part of Freiburg - the “Oberlinden” - Zum Roten Baren features fourteen double bedrooms, eight singles and a further three suites.
