Ocklynge Manor
Eastbourne, East Sussex, England.
The present house may be only a few centuries old, but the site has been inhabited for the best part of a millennium at least.
The current property is constructed on the site of what was once a Commandery of the Knights of St. John. Indeed, Godfrey de Bouillon (who was Duke of Lower Lorraine and an principal leader during the First Crusade) is recorded as having stayed here prior to his journey to the Holy Land – his sword is displayed in Jerusalem’s Church of the Holy Sepulchre.
Ocklynge’s other claims-to-fame include it having been home to the Governor of the Falkland Islands at the turn of the century, and the children’s artist Mabel Lucie Attwell (noted for illustrating Peter Pan).
Ocklynge Manor offers only 3 guest rooms (pile ‘em high it thankfully is not), and is officially classified as a 5-star Gold Bed & Breakfast. All are classically furnished and en suite. The house also boasts some fine gardens, these being occasionally open for charity as part of the National Gardens Scheme.
