The Old Hall
Ely, Cambridgeshire, England
This glorious Jacobean country house had fallen into a state of considerable disrepair during the latter half of the 20th century. Thankfully, though, it was painstakingly restored and returned to its former glory.
Indeed, its former inhabitants would probably consider it even finer these days given the modern luxuries and beautiful decor that greet visitors: luxury en suite bathrooms, iPod docking stations, flatscreen televisions and the highest quality linens are something the owners of centuries-past would certainly marvel at.
The Old Hall offers bed and breakfast accommodation via just three rooms: The Steward, The Ambrose and the Cromwell. And it is within their names that the historic significance of the building is to be found - it was, in fact, the birthplace of one Elizabeth Steward; mother of Oliver Cromwell.
Located just outside the city in the open countryside, the Old Hall boasts fine views of the city and its cathedral (sometimes referred to as “the Ship of the Fens”). Moreover, at the time of writing it has been the recipient of some truly exceptional reviews from former guests. Situated within a large estate and rated as a Five Star Gold bed & breakfast, a lowest-common-denominator corporate Travelodge this most certainly is not.
