Hintlesham Hall Hotel
Near Ipswich, Suffolk, England.
The intricate history of this exceptional Grade I listed building cannot be adequately covered here – many of the names associated with it will be familiar only to local historians and are, as such, outside the scope of this particular site.
Those who visit Hintlesham will first be struck by its splendid Georgian façade, but the real architectural significance of the building is the Elizabethan house which lies behind. Constructed during the late 1570’s, it replaced a medieval hall that would have stood nearby.
In terms of well known historic figures who might have visited, the artist Thomas Gainsborough is arguably the most notable. Friends with owners of Hintlesham during the mid 18th century – The Lloyds – Gainsborough is known to have painted their young children.
Set within over 170 acres of its own grounds and countryside, the hotel features 33 guest bedrooms in all, making it one of England’s more intimate large hotels. These include the Timperley and Gainsborough rooms. A real trip back in time without having to give up 21st century luxuries and comforts.
