Castell d'Emporda Hotel
La Bisbal d'Emporda, Catalonia, Spain.
Quite rightly a designated National Monument, this was the former home of Pere Margarit, one of Christopher Columbus’ captains, and discoverer of Margarita Island off the coast of Venezuela.
800 years old in parts (the first mention of the Castell d’Emporda was made in 1301), the building was almost purchased by Salvador Dali in 1973.
Accommodation is within the original building and a contemporary wing. Naturally, the heritage-enthusiast will prefer the former, and these include the Suite Pere Maragrit and rooms within the castle tower itself.
The Costa Brava and Girona are almost equidistant, and the border with France can be easily reached by car.
