The Bull
Bridport, Dorset, England.
If 'boutique' hotels are your preference, then this fine example of the genre will appeal to anyone planning to explore the Dorset coast. But just because it has one eye on quirkiness doesn't mean it isn't similarly appealing to those of us who enjoy staying in historic buildings. This is 17th century inn, after all.
Of course, simply being "old" doesn't necessarily qualify a place for inclusion on Nights in the Past (though we do make the occasional exception), and The Bull features on account of its link with Thomas Hardy. Admittedly, this connection is of a more casual nature than others, but it has been suggested that the building features in the author's short story Fellow Townsmen of 1880.
Also of historic note is that The Bull was the scene of a fatal shooting during the Monmouth Rebellion of 1645, and the hotel's restaurant is named after the very man who fired the shot through one of its windows: Colonel Venner.
Offering 19 very individual guest rooms, the Bull also boasts dining options via both its main restaurant and the Stable Restaurant to the rear of the building.
