Boringdon Hall
Plympton, Devon, England.
For a building to achieve Grade-I listed status it needs to be something quite out of the ordinary. And this fine Elizabethan house - close to the edge of Dartmoor and within easy reach of the rest of West Devon and Cornwall - is exactly that.
The estate’s history predates the Tudor period - it is mentioned in the Domesday Book and had also been a medieval monastery - but its historic claim to fame is very much of Elizabeth’s ‘Golden Age’.
We can never know whether the rumours are completely true, but Boringdon is said to have been visited on occasions by two of English history’s most famous seafaring names: Walter Raleigh and Francis Drake. Moreover, the building was temporarily owned by Henry Grey, Duke of Suffolk - the father of Lady Jane Grey who is often referred to as “The Nine Days Queen”.
Today, Boringdon Hall Hotel features 40 guest bedrooms in all, including a Royal Suite which takes in three levels and even includes an outdoor jacuzzi in a turret. Others include Four Poster Rooms, Executive Suites, and more contemporary Courtyard Rooms in recently refurbished wings of the building. The maritime city of Plymouth is just a few miles to the west.
