Court House Manor
Painswick, Gloucestershire, England.

There has been a house on the site presently occupied by Court House Manor since at least the early medieval period. In fact, it was the Lord of the Manor in the early 12th century, Pain FitzJohn, who gave his name to the splendid village of Painswick we know today.
Alas, the original building was destroyed in the 15th century, but no one could ever say that the present Court House Manor, built in 1605, is anything other than stunning. In fact, it must surely be one of the most aesthetically pleasing buildings in the whole of Gloucestershire - a county noted for the beauty of its architecture.
This is certainly a place for those with a passion for old houses as so many period details have been preserved, from stone fireplaces to authentic door furniture and original chamfered beams. But don't think that the comforts the discerning 21st century traveller demands have been overlooked - this is period boutique accommodation in the very best sense.
As if its Grade I listed status were not enough, it fully warrants its inclusion on Nights in the Past on account that King Charles I is widely held to have stayed in the building in 1643 around the time of the Siege of Gloucester. Indeed, the very room in which is supposed to have slept is one of a number available to guests on a bed and breakfast basis (the particular suite bears his name). Others have similarly individual titles such as Guinevere, Sir Lancelot, Queen of the Cotswolds, Julius Caesar, and The Tempest.
A truly unique piece of national heritage.
