Le Grand Ecuyer
Cordes sur Ciel, Midi Pyrenees, France.
As an indication of its impeccable heritage, this place became a listed building as far back as the 1800’s; a time when only the most notable places were being protected. Moreover, in Cordes sur Ciel (also known as La Perle des Bastides) Le Grand Ecuyer is situated within what is undoubtedly one of the finest little fortified towns in the whole of France.
The period furnishings may be from the 18th century and thereabouts, but some of the original architecture of this famous old inn dates back almost 800 years. Moreover, French icons of more recent times have flocked here, General de Gaulle, Francois Mitterrand, and Georges Pompidou among them. It is also said that the UK’s late Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother dined in the hotel’s restaurant.
Also of historic interest is that is was once the property of Raymond VII, Count of Toulouse (the grandson of King Henry II of England).
Offering just 13 guest rooms in all, Le Grand Ecuyer is within reasonable driving distance of Toulouse, while Albi is but a few miles to the south.
