The White Swan
Stratford upon Avon, Warwickshire, England.
As one might expect, there are a large number of ancient buildings in Stratford-upon-Avon, and the White Swan on Rother Street is most certainly one of them.
Parts of the house are estimated to have been standing since 1450 (predating the Tudor era by almost half a century) and it is, unsurprisingly, a grade-II listed building. Indeed, for most of its existence it has operated as an inn providing food, drink and lodgings to weary travellers visiting the town. Alas, we can only speculate as to how many famous names from the past must have passed through its doors, but it has been suggested that William Shakespeare would have almost certainly partaken of its hospitality as a young man. It is known that the playwright was friends with a gentleman named Richard Tyler who married into the family who owned the building (when it was known as the King’s House). It seems highly likely, therefore, that he would have spent time in the property with Richard and his young wife Susanne.
Today the White Swan still boasts many of the architectural features that would have been evident during Elizabethan times. It features 41 guest bedrooms in all, with the “Character Rooms” being located in the oldest part of the building.
