The Ship Inn
Porlock, Somerset, England.

Those with an interest in the work of the Romantic Poets will certainly want to add The Ship at Porlock to any itinerary.
Not only is Samuel Taylor Coleridge reputed to have spent time here, but Robert Southey even wrote verse while partaking of the pub’s liquid hospitality in 1798: "Porlock, thy verdant vale so fair to sight, Thy lofty hills, which furze and fern embrown, The waters that roll musically down..."
In truth, The Ship boasts an extremely rich local history – including that relating to smuggling - which is far too extensive to detail here. But, then again, anywhere with a heritage stretching back to the late 13th century is certain to have a tale or two to tell.
It should be noted that the house one sees today is most likely of the 16th century, but it is possible that the remnants of a much older structure are incorporated in the building.
Today, The Ship Inn offers just five guest rooms, and welcomes well behaved dogs.
