Mariners
Lyme Regis, Dorset, England.

The primary historic claim-to-fame of this Grade II listed building is actually something which you would more likely expect to find in a Lake District establishment. After all, this is where Beatrix Potter is reputed to have spent a holiday in 1904, and during which she worked on her Tale of Little Pig Robinson. In fact, several watercolour illustrations in the book were based on views of Lyme Regis and nearby towns such as Sidmouth.
It is also said that the noted fossil collector Elizabeth Philpot lived at the house with her sisters Margaret and Mary following their move from London in 1805. Together they built one of the most impressive collections of the time, and their work has inspired countless palaeontologists ever since.
Thought to date from the 17th century, the present day hotel offers accommodation via 14 guest bedrooms, many of which boast splendid sea views.
