The Kings
Stokenchurch, Buckinghamshire, England
Situated just a few miles from High Wycombe, this Stokenchurch landmark has been known as both The George and The George and Dragon in its long and distinguished history. Its present name, however, relates to a visit by Charles II in March 1660.
It is said that the king and his entourage passed through Stokencurch and alighted at The George. Unimpressed by the quality of the accommodation for his wife, he insisted that Queen Catherine spent the night in a tent on the common while he and Nell Gwynn retired to a room within the inn (the concept of hypocrisy had clearly not yet reached the court of Stuart England).
The interior is certainly a great deal more “contemporary boutique” than the monarch and his mistress would have known, and exactly which of the rooms they spent the night is unclear. Moreover, with 43 guest bedrooms, it is certainly a great deal larger than it would have been back then.
