The George
Piercebridge, Durham, England.

Said to date back, in parts, to the 16th century, this old coaching inn between Barnard Castle and Darlington has two historic claims-to-fame.
The first of these is that to be found within the building is the very clock which inspired Henry Work to create the famous children’s song and rhyme Grandfather Clock. It is said the author wrote the piece during a stay here in 1875 when the place was known as the Wayfarer’s Inn.
The second is that highwayman Dick Turpin is reputed to have stayed in the room which bears his name. Of course, the claim cannot be verified, but one assumes that he must have stayed somewhere on his travels and The George is as good a place as any.
The George offers a total of 28 guest rooms in all, a restaurant, bar, and is pet-friendly. Middlesbrough, Barnard Castle and Richmond are all within easy reach by car.
