Offering accommodation to visitors from around the world since becoming a hotel in 1822, the origins of the place are thought to date back to the 16th century when a Jesuit monastery was constructed here (they certainly knew a great location when they saw one).
Indeed, reminders of its religious foundations are still to seen – the cloisters have been transformed into a dining room, while a chapel is also to be found on site.
Of course, while these features will no doubt interest the architectural historian, others will be equally fascinated by the wealth of famous names to have passed through its doors: Mary Godwin (wife of the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley), Hans Christian Andersen, Goethe, the Duke of Wellington, and Joachim Murat to name but a few.
Today, the Grand Hotel Cocumella features 50 guest rooms and suites, an outdoor swimming pool and its very own private beach.
