Castello di Gabbiano
Mercatale val di Pesa, Tuscany, Italy.
If you have a mental picture of what the Tuscan countryside looks like, then that surrounding Castello di Gabbiano is almost certainly it. Or at least it should be.
Although the magnificent city of Florence to the north is easy to reach by car, those coming to this particular corner of Italy do so for the relaxing atmosphere and quietude. Featuring eleven guest bedrooms, a restaurant (Il Caviliere), and an outdoor swimming pool, one would be forgiven for never wanting to leave its confines during the stay.
As befits somewhere boasting a heritage stretching back to the 12th century, Castello di Gabbiano is at the centre of some remarkable historical stories. One of these is that where an old stone table now sits in the square in front of the castle, there once stood a giant tree under which Michaelangelo would seek inspiration.
Whether the fable is true or not doesn't really matter; Castello di Gabbiano is a very special place indeed.
