Les Trois Rois
Basel, Switzerland.

There are a number of hotels that vie for the imaginary - but still prestigious - title of the oldest in Europe. Les Trois Rois in Basel is one, and although it could never claim to be the oldest building offering accommodation, it really does have an impressive heritage.
Although most of the structure one sees today dates from the 18th century, the institution itself was established in 1026 AD. Its museum-piece guestbook contains such illustrious and recognisable names as Voltaire, Queen Victoria, Napoleon, and Kaiser Wilhelm II. It is also said that it was on the site that three kings (Conrad II, Henry III and Rudolf III) drew up a treaty incorporating the west of Switzerland into the Holy Roman Empire - the establishment has also been known as Drei Konige (the Three Kings) at times during its existence.
Located on the banks of the Rhine, the hotel also boasts a 2-Michelin star restaurant, the Cheval Blanc. It boasts a little over 100 rooms, and blends its historic past with up-to-date luxury.
