Hotellerie du Bas Breau
Barbizon, Ile de France, France.
Once a hunting lodge, this 19th century hotel on the edge of the Fontainebleau Forest in Ile-de-France is little more than 20 miles from central Paris as-the-crow-flies.
The building is historically significant for a couple of reasons. First of these is that it was once patronized by many of the Barbizon School artists such as Theodore Rousseau and Jean Francois Millet – a Realism art movement that drew inspiration from the surrounding countryside. However, perhaps a more familiar figure to many associated with Hotellerie du Bas Breau will be Robert Louis Stevenson.
Stevenson is known to have visited Barbizon on numerous occasions, and it was while staying at the Hotel Siron (today the Bas Breau) in 1879 that he is thought to have penned part of Treasure Island.
Notable guests from the latter half of the 20th century include Princess Grace of Monaco, Emperor Hirohito of Japan, and the American writer Julien Green.
Today, the hotel offers a total of 20 guest rooms (4 of which are suites), a restaurant, bar, and an outdoor swimming pool during the Summer season.
