The Royal Hotel
Cardiff, Wales.

Admittedly, this fine old Grade II listed building is very much geared towards the demands of the average 21st century traveller rather than those keen on heritage and period detail (especially given its location close to the Millennium Stadium), but it still boasts a particularly strong historical claim-to-fame.
Built in 1866, the Royal Hotel was where Captain Scott held his farewell dinner on June 13th 1910 prior to his departure for Antarctica – an expedition that would cost him and his four compatriots their lives. Today, the very room in which the event took place (then called the Alexandra Room) is where breakfast is served most mornings.
Other notable guests from more recent history include Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor.
Much of the hotel interior and most of the guest rooms have a modern feel these days and might not necessarily appeal to those seeking a romantic period place to stay, but it certainly remains an iconic landmark of the city of Cardiff.
