The Maid's Head
Norwich, Norfolk, England.
There are a number of hotels which lay claim (some mistakenly and without foundation) to the title of the oldest hotel in England. As such, it could be said that while the Maid’s Head isn’t the most ancient as some would contest, it is certainly of great age.
Indeed, according to English Heritage, the cellars of the building are likely to date from the 15th century, with a large proportion of the superstructure from the 16th. We can therefore assume that what is already a notably old building almost certainly had a predecessor (perhaps dating as far back as the 13th century as has been suggested).
Whatever the truth, the most celebrated historic fact about the Maid’s Head is that it reputedly entertained Queen Elizabeth I in 1587 – the room in which she is supposed to have slept is today named in her honour. Other notables reputed to have rested here include the Black Prince, and Catherine of Aragon, the first wife of King Henry VIII.
Today the hotel boasts a total of 84 bedrooms and offers four star accommodation in one of England’s most historic towns.
