The Red Lion
Hillingdon, London, England

When this historic old inn was built in the 16th century its surroundings would have been a great deal different to those of today. Situated twelve miles to the west of central London, what was once a relatively rural place is now part of the great metropolis.
Its primary historic importance is that King Charles I is reputed to have visited in April 1646. It is said that after fleeing Oxford he disguised himself as a servant and cut his hair so as not to be recognised by Parliamentarian troops. Evidence suggests that he and his companions stopped at The Red Lion for a short time, with one noting in his journal that: “At one Mr Teasdale's House a tavern at Hillingdon we alighted and stayed to refresh ourselves between 10 & 11 of the clock and there stayed 2 or 3 hours”.
With over 50 guest rooms it is certainly a great deal larger than when the Stuart monarch passed through its doors. But still here is the large fireplace of those times, as well as some exposed timbers. Today, the Red Lion offers a restaurant and bar as well as a garden and outdoor seating area for guests. Rooms are en suite and feature satellite television.
