Hotel Prindsen
Roskilde, Denmark.
Although the establishment has a heritage which dates back all the way to the 1690’s, the Hotel Prindsen as one sees it today is largely the product of the late nineteenth century.
It is, however, undeniably one of the most historic places to stay in Denmark. Indeed, the famous author Hans Christian Andersen stayed several times during his lifetime, the first being in 1825. However, a later visit during 1842 was less auspicious when he recorded being less than happy – something seemingly to do with the summer heat and lack of privacy owing to absent curtains.
Today, one of the suites bears Andersen’s name, with the other 72 guest rooms being described as classic or ‘nordic’.
Hotel Prindsen is ideally situated for those wishing to explore what the town of Roskilde has to offer the traveller: the medieval cathedral is just a short stroll away, while a fifteen minute walk will bring you to the Viking Ship Museum.
Copenhagen is also within easy driving distance to the east.
