The Leather Bottle
Cobham, Kent, England.
Dating from circa 1629, this picture-postcard pub is situated in the small village of Cobham, just a few miles to the south of Gravesend.
Reputed to have been a meeting-place for Royalists during the English Civil War, it is actually its connection to Charles Dickens for which it is most famous.
Whether or not the author actually wrote part of his first novel, Pickwick Papers, here as is sometimes suggested is difficult to substantiate. However, Dickens certainly frequented the place and the inn features in the book itself.
Enthusiasts of the prolific writer looking to stay at The Leather Bottle will no doubt be most interested in Room 6 which he is said to have used.
Incidentally, the name of the building derives from the discovery of a leather bottle containing gold sovereigns in 1720.
