The George Hotel
Penrith, Cumbria, England
Dating mainly from the 18th century, with further additions and modifications undertaken during the mid-19th and early-20th centuries, the George Hotel is undeniably one of Penrith's landmark buildings.
And so it should be. After all, this Grade II* listed building isn't just architecturally significant, but has also welcomed some notable figures during its time. Perhaps the most renowned of all former guests is Bonnie Prince Charlie who stayed in part of what was then the George and Dragon on the 22nd of November 1745. This immediately followed his successful Siege of Carlisle, though the nearby town was swiftly retaken by the Duke of Cumberland the following month.
Its other particularly notable historic visitor was James Boswell who partook of its hospitality on two occasions. The latter, in December 1787, coincided with his inauspicious stay at Lowther Hall with Lord Lonsdale during which he escaped to the George for much-needed nourishment: “I went to the George and had a pot of coffee and muffin and toast, the first comfortable meal I had enjoyed for some days, and I insensibly felt myself restored”.
Today the George Hotel offers 35 bedrooms in all, with on-site dining options are available via its Devonshire Restaurant, wood-panelled lounge, and Dappers Bar.
