Ruthin Castle Hotel
Ruthin, Denbighshire, Wales.

While much of the existing structure dates from the early 1800’s (extensive damage was done to the building during the 17th century), Ruthin Castle remains an exceptionally important piece of heritage. Indeed, it is rightly proud to be the only Edward I castle in Wales where guests can stay within its walls.
It would be impossible to fully detail its history here – the origins of the existing castle date back as far as 1277, after all. Moreover, it is even said that a fortress made of wood existed on the site up until that time, with romantic legend suggesting that King Arthur once visited. Whatever the truth, the place was certainly the property of monarchs from Henry VIII right up until the Civil War when it was besieged and taken by Parliamentary forces – the scars of this episode in its history are still very apparent.
Since the “new” castle was built in 1826 within the walls of its medieval predecessor, several notable figures have been connected with the place. Not least of these were Edward VII, Lady Randolph Churchill, and Lillie Langtry.
Today, Ruthin Castle offers 3-star rated accommodation and possesses 60 rooms, a restaurant and bar. The beautiful city of Chester, Snowdonia National Park and Wrexham are all within easy reach.
