Parador de Alarcon
Alarcon, Castile la Mancha, Spain.

Quite how much of the original Muslim castle from the 8th century remains is difficult to tell, but the Parador de Alarcon remains a truly awe-inspiring piece of medieval architecture.
Unsurprisingly, the heritage of the building runs deep. Captured by King Alfonso VIII in the 12th century, it later became the property of the Marquises de Villena. Perhaps most notably, the castle was also reputedly the home of Don Juan Manuel for some time (how many of his works were written here is unknown).
Those who stay here will undoubtedly appreciate the defensive nature of the structure - from the main tower (the Torre del Homenaje) the defensive walls and ravine down to the River Jucar are observable.
The Parador de Alarcon features its own restaurant specializing in regional cuisine, and a total of just 14 rooms of which the Infante Don Juan Manuel is arguably the most notable (it boasts private access to the lower watchtower).
