Grand Hotel de Bordeaux
Bordeaux, Aquitaine, France.
On the Place de la Comedie at the heart of the city, this Bordeaux landmark sits opposite the Grand Theatre in an area known locally as the Golden Triangle (or the “Quartier des Grand Hommes”).
As the name suggests, “grand” it most certainly is (at least by 19th century standards, anyway) as with 150 guest bedrooms this is one of the largest old hotels outside Paris. Moreover, it even boasts an indoor swimming pool, sauna and fitness centre in addition to its Michelin starred restaurant, Le Pressoir d’Argent.
Rooms are classified as Superior, Deluxe and Executive, while suites include the opulent Royal Suite.
Notwithstanding that this is an extremely impressive building, its primary reason for inclusion on Nights in the Past is its connection to Victor Hugo. It is said that in 1870 he gave a speech from the front steps of the building about creating a Europe to end wars – a point of view still being debated and polarizing opinion to this day. As such, the name of the hotel’s Victor Bar celebrates both the writer and the architect Victor Louis.
The Grand Hotel de Bordeaux is five star rated.
