Le Marechal
Colmar, Alsace, France.
Colmar is undoubtedly one of the most historic and beautifully preserved little towns in the whole of Alsace, and Le Marechal is one of its many notable landmarks.
Constructed in 1565 atop ancient fortifications, the hotel is one of the prettiest to be found in France. Of course, what makes somewhere aesthetically pleasing is down to personal opinion, but few could fail to find the classic Alsatian architecture of La Marechal anything but attractive.
Its primary historic significance is that during the late 17th century it was patronised by the French military icon Henri de La Tour d'Auvergne (Vicomte de Turenne) who is most often referred to simply as “Turenne”. At that point in its history the building was known as the Inn of the Black Mountains (Gasthof zum Schwartzenburg).
Today, La Marechal features 30 guest rooms and a restaurant (A l’Echevin) which specialises in regional cuisine. Dining is also available on the terrace overlooking the river during warmer months.
