Lewtrenchard Manor
Okehampton, Devon, England.
A former owner, the Reverend Sabine Baring Gould, was responsible for the hymn Onward Christian Soldiers. Today this beautiful Jacobean manor offers 14 unique guest rooms (including 4 suites).
It is said that the actual estate dates back as far as the Domesday Book, while the present building was constructed largely during the early 17th century. Indeed, the current layout and visual appearance of the property owes much to the aforementioned Sabine Baring Gould, while the grounds and gardens were created by Walter Sorel with assistance from Gertrude Jekyll.
Accommodation is divided between the main house and courtyard, with the former’s Gallery Suites, Nonington and St. Gertrude, providing some true step-back-in-time appeal. Interestingly, the Classic Double room “Melton” contains a four-poster bed that once belonged to the wife of King Charles I.
