Castello di Monterone
Perugia, Umbria, Italy.

A former military base along the route from nearby Perugia to Rome, the first documented reference to Castello di Monterone dates back to the 13th century.
Its 18 rooms are, as one might expect, all unique and full of traditional décor. Indeed, as is often the case with those establishments that take great pride in their heritage, the rooms are all individually named: la Stanza dell' Opretoia, la Stanza del Drago and la Stanza dell'Etrusco among them. There are also two suites - "la Camera delle Dame" and "Il Ponte Levatoio".
Its noted restaurant, Il Gradale, specialises in both traditional Umbrian dishes as well as contemporary cuisine.
The hotel also boasts a lounge bar, an outdoor swimming pool (open seasonally), a sauna, Turkish bath, and a heated outdoor jacuzzi – features we can safely assume aren’t from the dark days of the early medieval period.
