The Oxenham Arms
Near Okehampton, Devon, England.
Almost certainly one of the oldest inns in south west England, The Oxenham Arms is a Grade-II* listed building which is largely 16th century but with a heritage stretching even further back in time. Indeed, how many buildings can claim to have a prehistoric standing stone as part of the structure?
A number of historic figures have passed through its doors over the centuries, with Lord Nelson and Charles Dickens perhaps being the most notable. Indeed, the latter is supposed to have resided in the building for around a month having been snowed in. Alas, whether or not he worked on one of his famous tales we cannot be sure.
The inn offers just seven guest rooms in all, each of which is individually furnished and named after rare breeds of domestic animals: Rhode Island Red, Buff Orpington and Hereford among them
The Devon-Cornwall border is close by, as indeed is Dartmoor National Park.
