Castle Veldenstein

Burg Veldenstein almost demands inclusion on Nights in the Past on account of its sheer age alone. In fact, no one can really be sure how old it actually is. Some suggest that its origins can be traced back to the early 11th century, while others believe it is even more ancient still.
Whatever the truth, the place is first documented in 1269. Of course, it has been extended and greatly altered since then (not least in the early 20th century when it was extensively restored by Dr. Hermann Von Epenstein who had bought what remained of it in 1897).
Curiously, in 1937 the castle was inherited by Hermann Goring who later became the notorious Reich Marshal. Indeed, with the outbreak of World War II, Goring constructed a bomb-proof shelter beneath the fortress, complete with electricity and water supply. Legend has it that a large quantity of looted Nazi treasure was hidden at Burg Veldenstein but, despite numerous attempts, no one has yet unearthed it.
Today the castle is owned by the State of Bavaria and offers bed and breakfast accommodation via 19 guest rooms. It also features a restaurant.
