Ye Olde Bell
Retford, Nottinghamshire, England.
The actual age of this old coaching inn is difficult to ascertain, but it is believed that it was originally a farmhouse with probable 16th century origins.
History-buffs will no doubt want to stay in the Victoria Suite – the very room in which the young Queen Victoria stayed in 1835 with her mother, the Duchess of Kent. Moreover, it is thought that Queen Maude of Denmark kept a small suite of rooms at Ye Olde Bell during the 1950’s. These are thought to have been the present Bell Room and Room 1.
Other historic guests are said to have been Charlie Chaplin, Joan Crawford, Sir Harold Wilson and, more recently, the late actor Oliver Reed.
Ye Olde Bell offers 49 guest rooms in all, including a number of suites. These include the aforementioned Victoria Suite and also the Lady Jane Grey – this on account that some wood panelling from her former home, Bradgate House, was used in a refurbishment of the hotel in the mid 20th century.
Ye Olde Bell is situated in the village of Barnby Moor, just a couple of miles up the North Road (A638) from Retford.
