San Francisco Hotel Monumento
Santiago de Compostela, Galicia, Spain.
As one of the world’s foremost places of historic pilgrimage, Santiago de Compostela has welcomed so many religious icons through the centuries. One of these, it is said, was St Francis of Assisi in 1214.
Embellishments to the original story there may well have been through the ages, but it is said that he and his companions found lodgings in the home of a penniless coal merchant named Cotolay alongside the San Paio Chapel. It is said that while praying, St Francis received divine instruction that he should build a convent. And this, so the story goes, is it.
Of course, it didn’t have an indoor swimming pool back then. And nor, one would assume, a four-star hospitality rating.
