The Abbott's Fireside
Elham, Kent, England.

A curious name for a pretty 15th century inn, for much of its early existence the place was actually known as the more ordinary “Smithies Arms”.
Built in 1451, legend has it that Charles II hid in one of the house’s fireplaces while attempting to elude parliamentarian troops while secretly visiting England prior to the restoration (a relatively frequent claim made by a number of places the length and breadth of the country). Of course, while this might be mere romanticism, there is no reason why we should disregard it out of hand.
A more recent connection to historical events is the inn’s celebrated stay by the Duke of Wellington. Indeed, it is said that he used it ahead of embarking for the continent and destiny at the Battle of Waterloo - how much of Napoleon’s downfall was plotted within these walls we will never know.
The Abbott’s Fireside offers 5 bedrooms and is within easy reach of both Dover and Folkestone for those planning a trip across the English Channel by ferry.
