Grosvenor Arms
Shaftesbury, Dorset, England.
There are many splendid old buildings in Shaftesbury, not least those lining the famous steep cobbled street of Gold Hill. However, while most are of a more "rustic vernacular" nature, the Grade II* listed Grosvenor Arms is distinctly more grand in appearance.
The present building dates largely from the early 1800's and is the result of a reconstruction of an older inn (The Red Lion) which stood on the site. It is possible that some traces of the medieval structure remain, but the Grosvenor is every inch the classic Georgian coaching inn.
Alas, though we can safely assume that a fair number of recognisable names from history must have passed through its doors, there is little in the way of substantive evidence for any particular individual. However, we do know that the poet A E Housman was a guest in 1898, with a number of letters being sent from the address in July of that year.
The author of A Shropshire Lad would certainly still recognise the exterior were he alive today, if not so much the interior; a blending of contemporary style with the historic.
Offering 16 individually furnished guest rooms, the Grosvenor Arms has been the recipient of some extremely favourable guest reviews as of the time of writing, and it also features a popular restaurant.
