The Ravensworth Arms
Near Gateshead, England.
Although it is doubtful that Charles Lutwidge Dodgson was a “regular guest” as some would suggest, the man better known as Lewis Carroll almost certainly did stay at this early 19th century inn. Indeed, it has even been suggested that some of his most famous work, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, was actually penned here.
Moreover, those fascinated by literary links might be interested to learn that the mother of Catherine Cookson once worked at the inn, with some suggesting that the author herself was even conceived at The Ravensworth Arms. This is, of course, one of the more unusual historic claims-to-fame and completely impossible to verify, but perhaps worthy of mention nonetheless.
The hotel itself is located just a couple of miles to the south of Gateshead and is within just a few hundred yards of Anthony Gormley’s iconic Angel of the North statue. Newcastle upon Tyne, Chester-le-Street and Sunderland are also nearby.
The Ravensworth features 19 guest rooms in all, a restaurant and bar.
