The Ambleside Salutation
Ambleside, Cumbria, England

This 17th century inn close to Lake Windermere is reputed to have once been something of a haunt for romantic literature’s elite. John Keats stayed here for a while in 1818, as did Alfred Lord Tennyson and Edward Fitzgerald in 1835 - the former while composing Morte d’Arthur.
Of course, if they were alive today they would almost certainly recognise the place from the outside, but quite what they would make of the indoor swimming pool and health spa is anyone’s guess. It may be historic, but the place is very much geared for the demands of the 21st century traveller.
The Ambleside Salutation is ideally located for those seeking to explore this part of the Lake District on foot, with Lake Windermere less than half an hour away.
The hotel boasts over 50 guest rooms (it’s a little larger these days than when Keats, Tennyson et al would have known it), and two restaurants. The Garden Restaurant is open for dinner each evening, while the less formal Bistro serves food at lunchtime and during the evening.
The Ambleside Salutation welcomes well-behaved dogs for a small charge.
