Schwarzwalder Hof
Freiburg, Baden Wurttemburg, Germany.
This three star rated hotel at the heart of Freiburg is certainly of considerable age. And although some of the contemporary styling of the interior might not be to the absolute taste of those who prefer period décor, it remains a historic place to stay worthy of inclusion on Nights in the Past.
Its main significance is that it was in part of the building that the German poet and philosopher Johann Jacobi lived. Appointed to the post of professor at Freiburg University by Emperor Joseph II, his living quarters (reached via the staircase close to the hotel entrance) became a meeting place for the local intellectual community. Moreover, it is said that he was especially popular with women, and boasted a great number of female admirers who would attend his lectures.
Today, the Scwarzwalder Hof features 44 guest rooms which are classified as Classic, Suite and Modern (the latter unlikely to be of great interest to the heritage traveller).
The centre of Freiburg and its cathedral are just a short walk away.
