Hotellerie le Chateau Fort
Sedan, Champagne Ardennes, France.
If you have ever wondered which might be the largest castle in Europe, then wonder no more. Le Chateau Fort is it. And for that reason alone, rather than any specific connection to famous names from history, it warrants inclusion on Nights in the Past.
Construction of this impressive fortress is said to have commenced in 1424, but work continued over following centuries culminating in the giant structure one sees today – over 30,000 square metres in area and featuring ramparts over 100 feet high.
The fort was given to the people of Sedan by the French Army in the 1960’s and the Hotel Le Chateau Fort is set within its walls today.
France’s border with Belgium is just a few miles away.
