Hotel de Russie
Rome, Italy.
In all of Europe’s major cities there seems to be one particular place where 20th century avant garde creative types tended to gather. And in the case of Rome, that place would appear to be Hotel de Russie.
Pablo Picasso stayed here in 1917 and described the place as “a little corner of paradise”, while the likes of Jean Cocteau, Igor Stravinski, and John Ruskin are also former patrons. It should also be noted that the name of the hotel supposedly derives from its popularity with wealthy Russian visitors in days-gone-by, but whether any of them were recognizable figures is difficult to ascertain.
Those who prefer overtly classically furnished places to stay might not be immediately drawn to Hotel de Russie – it is, after all, a boutique hotel with a contemporary slant these days. But it just goes to prove that historic hotels come in all shapes, sizes and styles.
The Piazza del Popolo is but a few steps away, as is the Villa Borghese Park. And there’s a wellness centre complete with a hydomassage pool and Turkish bath for those who just want to stay put and relax. The Hotel de Russie is five star rated and features a noted restaurant, Le Jardin de Russie, and a bar named after one of its aforementioned famous former guests, The Stravinski.
