The Grosvenor Hotel
Chester, Cheshire, England
Arguably the city’s most iconic hotel, the half-timbered and Grade-II listed Grosvenor is a five-star establishment located right at the heart of the city. Though its styling is chic and contemporary, it’s been dispensing hospitality for over 140 years and continues to attract the rich and famous. It boasts over 80 rooms (including a Presidential Suite), a Michelin starred restaurant and a spa.
The heritage of the Grosvenor dates back the best part of 500 years, with previous incarnations as the Golden Talbot and The Royal playing their part in the city’s history. Notable names from history known to have stayed within its walls include King Edward VII in 1869 (as the Prince of Wales), while icons such as Princess Diana visited the hotel in the late 20th century.
Chester itself is almost certainly the finest walled city in Britain, with all but a fraction of its stone enclosure remaining. It also boasts a partly uncovered Roman amphitheatre, and plenty of iconic Tudor houses. Interestingly, it is also home to the oldest race course in Europe: the Roodee.
5 star rated, The Grosvenor features 68 bedrooms and a further 12 suites which include a spacious Presidential. Dining options are available at the Michelin-starred “Simon Radley at the Chester Grosvenor”, The Arkle Bar, and La Brasserie. The hotel is well known for its afternoons teas (including the “Gentleman’s Indulgent Afternoon Tea”), and also features a spa for those seeking a little bit of pampering.
