Old Hall Country House
Madeley, Staffordshire, England.
On Staffordshire’s border with Cheshire lies the small village of Madeley, and it is here that one of England’s most historic places to stay is situated - a 16th century timber frame former farmhouse within two acres of gardens.
Offering only a handful of rooms, there may be more historic significance per square foot here than in any other hotel, inn or other accommodation property anywhere in the country.
After all, only those who stay in the King Charles II room can claim to have as their closet the very place where the then Prince Regent hid from Roundhead troops. In fact, the very shelf upon which he is said to have laid his cross and bible is still in existence.
Guest bedrooms include the aforementioned King Charles II (complete with four poster bed), and the Queen Margaret Room. The latter is so named as it is believed that Queen Margaret of Scotland (the sister of Henry VIII) stayed at the Old Hall in the early 1500’s while en route to the battle at Eccleshall.
Of national historic significance the Old Hall Country House most certainly is.
