Churston Court Hotel
Brixham, Devon, England.
If reviews are to be believed - and there’s no reason they shouldn’t in this case - then Churston Court should feature on the itinerary of every ‘time traveller’.
This beautiful historic hotel is quite rightly Grade-I listed and boasts both Sir Walter Raleigh and his half-brother, Sir Humphrey Gilbert, amongst former guests. Agatha Christie is also known to have frequented Churston Court on several occasions with Death on the Links thought to have been written here. It has even been suggested the Bruce Reynolds hid here for a while following the Great Train Robbery. Moreover, while it is impossible to verify the claim, William III (while still Prince of Orange) is reputed to have visited the building in 1688
The hotel offers 20 guest rooms in all, and include “Superior Rooms” named after famous figures such as Henry VIII, Cromwell, Walter Raleigh, King John and Charles I. Located between Brixham and Torbay, this magnificent country house sums up the phrase “they don’t make them like they used to” as well as any.
