Anywhere with structural timbers over 1000 years old is bound to have more than its fair share of tales to tell.
Said to date back as far as 947 AD, The Royalist has many curious features befitting such an ancient building: “witch marks” above the fireplace to ward off evil spirits, a medieval frieze, and even a leper pit in the oldest part of the cellars. Of course, the entire building one sees today doesn’t date back over a thousand years, but one certainly gets a sense of being in a very historic place indeed.
The name itself is linked to the English Civil War when the building was used as headquarters of the Royalist army prior to the Battle of Stow in 1646 - a battle they would lose at great cost.
The hotel also features an adjacent pub, The Eagle and Child, where unpleasant pursuits such as Bear baiting would have once taken place.
The Royalist offers 14 guest rooms in all (of varying sizes and characters), a restaurant and bar. Please note that the hotel is sometimes now referred to as "The Porch House".
