Bussaco Palace
Luso, near Coimbra, Portugal.
Built in the late 1800’s on land that had once been that of a Carmelite Convent, the Palace Hotel of Bussaco was originally intended to be a hunting lodge for the last kings of Portugal. However, its most notable historic significance relates to the Peninsular War.
It is said that following victory over Napoleon’s troops at the Battle of Bussaco on September 27th 1810, Viscount Wellington (later the Duke of Wellington) spent the night in the convent. Part of this building is to be found next to the hotel. Indeed, legend has it that the very Olive tree to which Wellington tethered his horse can be found nearby.
Described as Manueline-Gothic (ornate stonework a characteristic), the Bussaco Palace will no doubt fascinate the architectural historian. Moreover, the classic styling continues throughout its interior.
Five-star rated, the hotel features over 60 rooms and suites, and a restaurant specializing in both French and Portguese cuisine.
