Parador de Hondarribia
Hondarribia, Basque, Spain.

The origins of this former castle overlooking the River Bidasoa are thought to date back as far as the tenth century when it was built by the King of Navarre, Sanch Abarca, as part of the Christian reclamation of Spain from the Moors. Admittedly, its present appearance owes much to reconstruction carried out in the 16th century, but there can be no doubting that it is a very historic building indeed.
In fact, given the sheer age of the structure it seems almost incidental that the likes of Admiral Antonio de Oquendo and Garcilaso de la Vega once stayed within its walls. Moreover, the place can even claim to have welcomed the likes of Sophia Loren during more recent times.
Providing bed & breakfast accommodation, the Parador de Hondarribia today offers 36 guest rooms and some genuine step-back-in-time appeal.
Its location right on the border with France makes it a great option for those traveling from the ferry ports of Bilbao or Santander into Aquitaine or the Pyrenees.
