The Elvetham Hotel
Near Hook, Hampshire, England.
This striking Victorian country house near Basingstoke is certainly impressive, but its predecessor was by far the more historic. Once the property of the Seymour family, it became home to Edward – brother of Jane Seymour - who acted as Lord Protector to the young Edward VI.
Elizabeth I is known to have visited the original manor which, sadly, was razed to the ground after a fire in 1840. However, the very oak tree she planted during her stay in 1591 is still to be found here – it is reputed to now be over 30 feet in circumference.
The 72 rooms at the Elvetham Hotel are divided between the main house and the Court Building (created from former stables) with the former more classical in design and the latter more contemporary. Farnborough and Basingstoke are both close by, while London and Heathrow Airport are easily accessed via the M3 motorway.
Well behaved dogs are welcome on request.
