Chateau de Chissay
Near Amboise, Centre, France.

All too often the term “steeped in history” is used to describe hotels of reasonable age. But in the case of Chateau de Chissay it would be perfectly apt rather than just a cliché.
The building was originally constructed for Pierre Berard, Chancellor of France under Charles VII, and during its time welcomed not only the aforementioned monarch, but also Louis XI.
More recently, in 1940 the then Prime Minster of France, Paul Reynaud, came to Chateau de Chissay and set up headquarters from which he could attend to affairs of state. During that time he held conferences with both French and British officials, eventually culminating in a visit by Charles de Gaulle to discuss the plan for defending Brittany against German attack.
Today, Chateau de Chissay offers 30 guest rooms, and an all-year outdoor swimming pool. Its location close to Amboise means that it is ideally positioned for those seeking to explore what is undeniably one of the most heritage-rich parts of France. Indeed, the chateau itself must surely be one of the most historic in the country.
