When the daytime visitors to the extremely beautiful Castle Combe have left, take a walk down to the bridge and look back up towards its Market Place. By doing so you will get as close to being in a quintessential English village a hundred years ago as it is possible to be.
Of course, a splendid little place needs a splendid little place to stay, and the Castle Inn certainly offers that. While the hospitality may thankfully be more 21st century than 15th, this is undoubtedly somewhere to escape modernity. And anyone who enjoys the feeling that only historic surroundings imbue will find much to their liking.
Indeed, it seems almost an aside to highlight the fact that Oliver Cromwell reputedly once stayed (and perhaps more than just briefly).
Featuring just 11 guest bedrooms (all individually furnished as one might expect) and a celebrated restaurant, the Castle Inn is stylish and historic in equal measure.
